Kofi Annan
Another charismatic personality who is no longer with us, Kofi Annan was the first black African and the seventh secretary-general of the UN between 1997 and 2006 and won the Nobel peace prize for his humanitarian work.
Even after his time at the UN, Annan continued with his humanitarian work under his foundation, the Kofi Annan Foundation and the Elders, a group founded by Nelson Mandela. He was also part of the team that mediated for peace in Kenya after the 2007/2008 post-election violence and in 2016, he was the head of the UN commission to investigate the Rohingya crisis.
