Tanzania’s president has warned against the “misuse” of the internet on several occasions.
The final straw the broke the camel’s back was the imposition of a strict internet regulation that required website owners, bloggers and social media users to apply for a license to operate and pay a $930 fee to publish content.
The Electronic and Postal Communications (Online Content) Regulations 2018 is in place to give the authorities unprecedented control over the internet.
It also lists a series of prohibited content, including content that “causes annoyance or leads to public disorder.” Internet cafes are also required to install surveillance cameras.
