Richard Henry Bullock – Imari Obadele
Imari Obadele was born Richard Henry Bullock. He was a civil rights leader who helped to continue with the vision of Malcolm X after his death. Irritated by racism, he and others formed the Republic of New Afrika in 1968 and among other things, adopted African names and dropped their ‘slave names’. The organization urged African-Americans to have a name change that was more African and gave them African identities since they have undergone some kind of evolution that set them apart from other Africans at home. The organization saw the need to let members adopt new African names that allowed them to share similarities with Africans on the African continent.
