Laura Nelson was lynched on May 25, 1911. She was lynched alongside her son L.D. Nelson near Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma.
They were snatched from cells the night before by a group of white mobs, numbering 40. Nelson’s son L.D. was accused of killing Okemah’s deputy sheriff, George Loney, during a search of the Nelsons’ farm for a stolen cow.
Nelson and her son were both charged with murder. They were kidnapped during the night of 24 May, 1911. Nelson was raped repeatedly, lynched and hanged from a bridge over the North Canadian River with her son.
