On July 29, 2000, Pastor Francis Gichuru married Mercy Muthoni in a wedding that was boycotted by his family.
The issue was that his wife-to-be had a child from a broken marriage.
The couple was not fazed, they concentrated on creating a wonderful marriage and hoped everything would go on well.
However, things got rocky after the second year. Muthoni received a call from Botswana, where Gichuru had gone for missionary work. The organisation had called to ask her to come for her husband who had gotten ill and weak.
The two returned to Kenya in 2004. Since then, Gichuru has been very weak with headaches and fatigue.
In 2007, his wife realized that his breasts were enlarged and upon inspection, they started producing milk just like a lactating woman.
“By this time, his libido had gone down drastically. I called a doctor who advised us to go to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for tests,” she said.
The couple, for two years, went to different doctors but none could tell what the problem was.
One day in 2010, Gichuru heard a radio programme discussing symptoms similar to his. He called the station and asked for the doctor’s contact.
Upon seeing the doctor, he was told that he was suffering from a rare disorder called prolactinoma.
Prolactinoma is a condition in which a noncancerous tumour of the pituitary gland in the brain overproduces the hormone prolactin, which decreases levels of some sex hormones, mainly, estrogen in women and testosterone in men.
The condition causes infertility, as well as, vision and hearing loss.
Since 2007, Gichuru has been expressing milk like a lactating mother in order to reduce the pain.
The pastor is currently on drugs to ease the pain but he needs to raise about $29,625 to undergo surgery in India to remove the tumour.
The couple is pleading with all and sundry to assist them to raise the amount.
Gichuru talks more about his condition on local media television, NTV.
