Netflix is serious about Africa and their interest in the continent has grown over the years. The company is expanding its streaming services in Africa as there have been several isolated deals with the likes of John Boyega and Mo Abudu to start producing African content for the platform.
Netflix has gradually been working its way into the African homes by making major moves towards garnering more African patronage. In 2015, the US media streaming company paid $12 million for the global distribution of “Beasts of No Nation,” which starred the multitalented Idris Elba.
That same year, Netflix purchased Nigerian blockbusters like “October 1” and “Fifty” which marked the inception of the distribution of Nigerian content on their platform. The first African country to have its own Netflix original series was South Africa in 2019 with the show, Shadow.
Netflix continues to search for ways to penetrate and claim dominance on the continent of more than one billion people and has commissioned some local productions in Zambia, South Africa, and Nigeria.
Earlier this year, Netflix made a major announcement of its full presence in Nigeria when it created a new Twitter account for Netflix’s operations in the country, called Netflix Naija.
The move is part of the global platform to increase diversity in the shows it features on its list and is also inspired by the belief that international films will be the centre of focus in the near future, moving the focus from U.S. productions.
