Meet the Proud Nigerian Father of Five Female Lawyers

In a society where women have been denied the right to get a formal education for decades, a Nigerian man took it upon himself to change the status quo by ensuring that his five daughters achieved their career dreams of working as lawyers.

Dr. Uja Tor Uja, a prominent Nigerian journalist and seasoned administrator, caused a stir on social media earlier this year when he announced that his five daughters, and his only children, are all qualified lawyers.

In a Facebook post, Uja wrote:

And now, the story I was waiting for. Tor & Berry met about 35 years ago, and they decided to dedicate their lives to God…for a while it seemed like God was just minding his business and ignoring them. He gave them 5 children, 5 girls…and we all know Nigeria; they don’t think much of the girl child. Anyway, fast forward a few years and God decided to shut everyone up!!!! Ladies and gents I’d like to introduce you to the first parents in Nigeria (I stand corrected) who have 5 KIDS, All GIRLS, All LAWYERS!!!

The five daughters are named Nguemo, Wanter, Nguter, Nguuma, and Ushakuma.

Many African communities still consider it abnormal for a household to lack a male child, with some people even seeing it as a curse. In some societies, a man is even allowed to divorce his wife if she doesn’t give birth to a male child.
