Tributes pour in as Morgan Heritage lead singer Peter Anthony Morgan dies aged 46

Peter Anthony Morgan, the lead singer of the Grammy award-winning reggae band Morgan Heritage, passed away on Sunday at the age of 46. Per the Jamaica Observer, Peter’s demise was announced by his family in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

“It is out of sincere love that we share that our beloved husband, father, son and brother and lead singer of Morgan Heritage Peter Anthony Morgan has ascended today February 25th, 2024. Jah come and save us from ourselves because love is the only way,” the statement said.

“Our family thanks you in advance for your overwhelming love and support, and we ask for your continued prayers as we go through this process. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of healing. Thank you!”

The Caribbean nation’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, also sent his condolences to the deceased musician’s family. “My heart is heavy to learn of the passing of Peetah Morgan of the world renowned Morgan Heritage,” Holness posted on X. 

“I send my deep condolences to the  Morgan family as they grieve  this tremendous loss which is also  a colossal  loss for Jamaica and for Reggae Music.”

Holness added: “Our country is grateful for his life and contribution and the sharing of his exceptional musical talent which touched each of us. I pray for the family’s peace and comfort during this unimaginably difficult time.”

Morgan Heritage, a renowned reggae band, was founded by Peter and his four other siblings in 1994. The other band members include Una Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan. In 2016, their Strictly Roots album won a Grammy for the best reggae album.

Their father, Denroy Morgan, was also a popular reggae artist. Peter’s cause of death was, however, not disclosed by his family.
