Will Smith will “at some point down the line” make a decision on whether to run for political office in order to fight for the things that he believes in, including the never-dying topic of who gets to be called an American.
Smith’s new six-part documentary series for Netflix titled Amend: The Fight For America is an exploration of the Fourteenth Amendment of the US constitution which speaks to equality and justice for every American. Promoting the series, the actor told the popular podcast show Pod Save America:
“I think for now I’ll let that office get cleaned up a little bit and then I’ll consider that at some point down the line,,,I don’t know, it’s like, I absolutely have an opinion. I’m optimistic. I’m hopeful. I believe in understanding between people and I believe in the possibility of harmony. So, I will certainly do my part, whether it remains artistic or at some point ventures into the political arena.”
It is not the first time the Bad Boys actor has spoken of his desire to make an impact beyond entertainment and in politics.
In 1999, then considered one of the funniest men on TV due to the show Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, he was invited to spend a night at White House by President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton. Smith joked that the presidential couple needed to keep his bed in the Lincoln bedroom warm.
He went on to say at the time: “That might sound foolish to some But, in my mind, if Ronald Reagan can become President, then why not Will Smith?”
Smith reiterated his desire for the presidency in 2015 after then-Republican candidate Donald Trump‘s incendiary comments about Muslims and Mexicans only made him more popular, an upward trend that won him the Republican nomination.
He told CBS’ Sunday Morning: “If people keep saying all the crazy kinds of stuff they’ve been saying on the news lately about walls and Muslims, they’re going to force me into the political arena…I mean, I gotta be the president. Come on!”.
