You can now call Rihanna Ambassador Fenty of Barbados

Rihanna’s star keeps on rising.

She has now added the title of ‘ambassador’ to her long list of achievements after the government of Barbados named her the “ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary,” with the specific duty of promoting education, tourism and investment for the island country.

According to the Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley:

Rihanna has a deep love for this country and this is reflected in her philanthropy, especially in the areas of health and education. She also shows her patriotism in the way she gives back to Barbados and continues to treasure the island as her home. She has also demonstrated, beyond her success as a pop icon, significant creative acumen and shrewdness in business. It is therefore fitting that we engage and empower her to play a more definitive role as we work to transform Barbados.

Rihanna accepted the appointment, stating that she would love to work with Prime Minister Mottley.

“I couldn’t be more proud to take on such a prestigious title in my home country. Every Barbadian is going to have to play their role in this current effort, and I’m ready and excited to take on the responsibility.  I look forward to working with Prime Minister Mottley and her team to reimagine Barbados,” she stated.

It would not be the first time the singer, businesswoman and philanthropist has represented her country. In 2008, she was appointed as one of Barbados’ Cultural Ambassadors to work with the ministry of tourism to promote the island.

This is just one of the many prestigious titles bestowed on her. Just last month the University of West Indies Cave Hill Campus had announced that it will award the singer an Honorary Doctorate of Letters, which is given to people who have made huge contributions to the Caribbean and the world. It would be her second honorary degree after she had received one from the Parsons School of Design in 2017.

In 2016, she was named the first-ever Global Ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education, a role she has seen her encourage world leaders and policymakers to boost their support for global education and education in emergencies.

She was also named the Humanitarian of the Year by Harvard Foundation for Interracial and Cultural Relations in 2017 for the work her charitable organisation, Clara Lionel Foundation has been doing.

Through the foundation, she has done a number of projects to support education across the world including in Malawi, where she gave out free bicycles to girls as part of a new campaign to get them to attend school. She was responding to one of the main challenges to education in Malawi: long distance travelling, which limits many secondary school students from completing their education.

The singer had recently held the fourth edition of the Diamond Ball, in support of the Clara Lionel Foundation, which she had created in honour of her grandparents to support innovative and effective education programs around the world. The foundation also works to improve health, education, arts and culture around the world.

The already popular online sensation, who was listed among Time Magazine’s 25 most influential People on the Internet in 2017, is also busy with other projects alongside her charitable work, including her Fenty Beauty makeup line,  Savage x Fenty lingerie line, Fenty x Puma partnerships, and recording new music.
