10 iconic black activists who visited Ghana in the 50s and 60s

George Padmore-1957

George Padmore established a great bond and lasting friendship with Nkrumah a few years before the latter returned to Ghana. During Nkrumah’s fight for a free Gold Coast, Padmore exchanged several letters with him, advising him on steps and measures to take. Padmore relocated to Ghana after Nkrumah became president, writing for several of Nkrumah’s newspapers and later working as the president’s advisor on African affairs until his death in 1959.

The George Padmore research library was established in his honour as a research and educational centre for African-American studies in Accra Ghana.
