African-American author Ntozake Shange, known for works including For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf, passed on early Saturday morning. She was 70.
According to the family of the author, she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Born Paulette L. Williams on October 8, 1948, in Trenton, New Jersey, Shange came from a prominent family. Her father was an Air Force surgeon and her mother, an educator and psychiatric social worker. They supported and encouraged her interest in the arts, particularly in poetry.
She went ahead to publish novels, poetry collections, children’s books and plays, which had an immense contribution to the Black Arts Movement as well as feminist movement in America and in the world.
