The death of George Floyd on May 25 reopened a major wound and grievance among African Americans and other people of color that has long been ignored and minimally discussed with little to no steps taken to eventually heal it.
The 46-year-old Black man’s death in the hands of a Minneapolis officer reignited the Black Lives Matter Movement and sparked nationwide protests against police use of deadly and excessive force against Blacks and systemic racism, with protestors calling for swift reform.
The largely peaceful protests, which are still ongoing, also sparked several protests against racial discrimination outside the United States.
The almost three months of unabated protests have yielded some positive results with authorities finally introducing and taking some much-needed reforms in the quest for inclusivity and also to eliminate discrimination. There is, however, still a very long way to go.
In the wake of the protests, some musicians have released powerful songs to support these movements and also call for change. With their large following and influence, expressing the voice of the people through music during times like these is indispensable.
