14-year-old Spelman freshman, Sydney Wilson, makes Dean’s list

At 14, Sydney Wilson became one of the youngest students admitted to Spelman College.

She did not only make it to the prestigious all-women HBCU as a teen, but she has also made it to the Dean’s List.

“I am now able to see how the semester has impacted my life, refined my character and gifted me the ability to see things from different perspectives,” said Wilson who ended the first semester as a college student with a 3.76 GPA.

Even though Wilson had a full course loaded with classes like Population Biology, Big Questions Colloquia, and African Diaspora & The World, she still had a huge accomplishment for any college student.

College life hasn’t been easy for Wilson.

“It was a little hard at the beginning being away from my family but luckily I got to see them often. There have definitely been some ups and downs but the ups certainly outweigh the downs,” Wilson said.

With the experience she has acquired so far, Wilson is prepared to face the coming semester.

The teen who plans to major in biology hopes to use animal science to come up with cures for human illnesses.

Wilson said her classmates often teased her for being too smart, but she was focused. “I just stayed on my path, I didn’t really feel like I needed to be popular… because I mean, I like myself,” she said.

She applied to Spelman when she was still 13 years. A week after she turned 14, the school reached out to Wilson’s father in an email, letting him know that his daughter had been accepted.

Wilson is due to graduate from Spelman in 2023.
