2023 Golden Globes nominations announced: here are the Black nominees

The 2023 Golden Globes nominations were announced live Monday morning, with a solid group of Black nominees. Winners of the upcoming 80th annual Globes will be disclosed on January 10 from the Beverly Hilton on NBC and Peacock.

The HFPA-backed Globes return to the air in 2023 after NBC declared that it would not air the telecast in 2022 following a scandal. In February 2021, a week before the 78th Golden Globes broadcast, a Los Angeles Times exposé showed that there were no Black members among the 87-member votership of the HFPA (The Hollywood Foreign Press Association). The HFPA subsequently faced backlash from scores of film professionals, including Ava DuVernay, Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson. 

NBC indicated early this year that the Globes would return in January after the HFPA introduced reforms including boosting the racial diversity of its membership. “This is really not the old HFPA anymore. Over the past 18 months — almost two years now — we took a deep look inward and listened to the criticism. … And we built a new infrastructure that transformed our organization and the awards show into something that is more diverse, transparent, and responsive,” the group’s president Helen Hoehne told The Hollywood Reporter.

Monday’s nominations were read by father and daughter, George and Mayan Lopez, on NBC’s “Today” show. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the awards. Check out the full list of the Black nominees below:
