27-year sentence handed to Texas man who traveled over 200 miles to kill ex’s new boyfriend

A 27-year prison sentence was handed to a Texas man who traveled about 250 miles to kill his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend – though he mistakenly murdered the wrong person.

According to Fox News, 26-year-old Kendell Morris’ conviction came after he was found guilty of murdering Robert Cooley III. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said that on May 4, 2020, Morris drove from Houston to Arlington to purposely kill his ex-lover’s new boyfriend. The distance between the two cities is about 250 miles.

Authorities said Morris shot and killed Cooley after he saw him at an apartment complex’s parking lot. Morris thought Cooley was his intended target when he opened fire on him. The convicted man was later arrested in the city of Madisonville.

Another suspect was also charged with murder over the fatal incident. But court documents showed that charge was later dismissed.
