It is believed he played an influential role in the election of US President, Bill Clinton, in 1992 and was an important protagonist in the search for his candidacy to lead the Democratic Party. His political astuteness and tactfulness in the politics of Washington were considered unmatched even in his way of working with the opposite side of the House to achieve his goals.

Even before his political career, Ronald Harmon Brown demonstrated he was different from his peers. He broke the many barriers life presented him with; being the first black person to head the Democratic National Committee of a national political party and the first to serve as secretary of commerce. He also became the first African American partner at Patton, Boggs, and Blow, and the first to become a member of the Sigma Phil Epsilon fraternity.
