Erta Ale
Erta Ale in Ethiopia is among the driest, lowest and hottest places on earth. It is in the Danakil Depression in the Afar Region of north-eastern Ethiopia. Temperatures range from 77◦F to 118◦F. The area is plagued with drought, with little to no trees and roads. This is one of the world’s continuously active volcanoes. The Afar people refer to it as “the smoking mountain” or “the gateway to hell”, according to Atlasobscura.com. It is 2,011 feet high and has two of the world’s active lava lakes making it quite unique. This volcano is good for the adventure folks. Tourists could only access it via helicopters but now, it is possible to drive within 4.3 miles of the volcano.
