Akpeteshie (Ogogoro, Apio, Agrogro, Kill me quick, VC10 etc.)
Akpeteshie is a very popular locally brewed liquor in West Africa native to Ghana. The name is said to be a spin on the Ga phrase ‘Akpe te shie’ which translates to ‘the act of hiding’, as that was the plight of consumers of the liquor after it was banned in the region during colonial rule.
It is made by distilling fermented palm wine or sugar cane juice and is known by an array of names like Ogogoro, Apio, Agrogro, Kill me quick, VC10 and a lot more others. Despite the side-effects of too much intake of the drink, it is still widely consumed. Research has shown that men drink mainly for coping responses, including increased self-confidence, adult status, and to cope with various social demands. Women tend to drink for socialising with peers.
