Angola
Parliamentary elections in Angola are scheduled for a yet to be decided date in August. The Angolan constitution provides that the leader of the party with the most votes automatically becomes the new president.
President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, 74, who is also the leader of the ruling MPLA party, announced last December that he was stepping down from office in 2018 and would not be seeking re-election in the 2017 polls.
In his place, Vice President João Lourenco, a former defense minister, has been elected as the new party leader. The MPLA has dominated Angolan politics for decades and Lourenco is widely expected to win.
