In 2009, Jammeh ordered the rounding up of sorcerers after his aunt died. Jammeh believed that she was killed by witchcraft, and made it his mission to get rid of witchcraft in the country. In the next seven years, his security personnel would hold random people in villages, force them to drink a hallucinogenic and pressuring them to confess to murders and crimes.
Sintet village was a victim to such witchhunt when on March 9, 2009, paramilitary police surrounded the village at 5am, forcing more than 300 people in a bus and taking them to Kanilai, where one of Jammeh’s farms was located.
At least two people died and many others run to nearby Senegal for safety.
