Jammeh was almost always in the news for the arbitrary arrests and murder of his opponents, and people who tried to stand up against him. He even killed his cousin, Haruna Jammeh, who had dared to stand up against him.
In March 2006, his Jungulers killed six men accused of an attempted coup and threw them into a well. The same was the case in 2012 when nine death row inmates were strangled and dropped in different wells.
In 2000, he oversaw the killing of university students and a journalist when the students were protesting the murder of their colleague.
The former president also oversaw the imprisonment of individuals who were then detained for days on end without trial.
