Gorée Memorial
This site pays homage to the many Africans sold as slaves and sent to the Americas and Europe during the transatlantic slave trade. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and since the 15th century it was home to the Portuguese, English, French and the Dutch and it was only handed over to Senegal in the mid-20th century.
Today the island draws in many Africans in the diaspora who seek to pay homage to their roots. To honor the memories of the slaves who had to endure brutality during their transit, a monument was put at the peak of the island.
The Gorée memorial itself was completed in 1999 and the construction of the Gorée Memorial complex commenced in 2019.
