The internet is one of the useful tools in the world, from connecting people, enabling purchases and even providing information, among others. It has also been the platform to which citizens of different countries turn when they want to express dissent or criticise their governments.
It is, therefore, no surprise that some African governments have tried to shut down the internet to repress such dissent and even hide what is happening in their backyards. They have also blocked the internet it to prevent exam cheating and terrorism.
Such shutdown not only disrupted the digital economy, it also cost African countries about USD 218 million.
Here are some of the African countries that had partially or completely shut down the internet.
