Last weekend, things sizzled up in the Broad Street Ballroom in New York City, as models, designers, critics, and fashion lovers gathered together to celebrate African fashion at its best.
African Fashion Week New York is an annual event that showcases diverse and upcoming designers to voice their talents and skills through creative forums.
Cameras flashed and music boomed at the beginning of each show, as everyone prepared to make the night greater than the one that came before it. Designers, models and invited guests came from far and wide: This international affair included people from Africa and Europe alike.
The fashion show began on Thursday and ran through Saturday night. Asake-Oge Couture, Suakoko Betty, and Bill Witherspoon are just a few of the designs that rocked the runway.
Asake-Oge Couture is a Nigerian inspired line based in London. Its style showcases a new way of wearing African print. Head turned as designer Asake Agoro’s versatile fashions graced the runway.
Suakoko Betty gave viewers a truly unique look at African fashion. Designer Charlene Bendu Dunbar’s handmade collections stood out from the rest on Friday. Most impressive was the adaptability of her line: it had the ability to be worn by anyone and everyone.
Bill Witherspoon’s eye-catching collection was a great representation for male African fashion. His loud and eccentric designs mesmerized the crowd, and left an imprint in our heads with his larger than life Kangol-esque hats.
Danielle Martin’s work had a beautiful display of gowns and dresses. Her collection featured an exclusive bridal line that was leaps and bounds among the rest.
Bold, edgy and jaw-dropping fashions captivated the audience walk after walk. African Fashion Week New York was truly a weekend to remember.
