‘Orfeu’ (1999)
Forty years after the original black-and-white version of “Black Orpheus” was released, the play by Vinicius de Moraes was adapted once again for the turn-of-the-millennium audience. Like its predecessor, this version depicts the ill-fated love affair between the title character “Orfeu” and “Eurydice” against a backdrop of crowdedfavelas (or slums) and samba schools. Audiences get to see the story unfold in color this time, featuring scenes shot during the 1998 Carnival in Rio. I promise not to mention Zezé Motta again after this film.
