Tiffany Haddish claims Common pursued her for two years before she agreed to date him

In a recent interview with PEOPLE ahead of the release of her Curse You With Joy memoir, Eritrean-American comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish said her ex-boyfriend Common “chased” her for two years before she ultimately agreed to enter a relationship with him.

“The only celebrity I’ve entangled with, it was two years of him chasing me down before I finally was like, ‘Okay, let’s do something’,” the Girls Trip star said. “That was top of 2020, but we met at the beginning of 2018, 2017.”

As previously reported by Face2Face Africa, Haddish, 44, and the Chicago rapper dated for more than a year before breaking up in 2021. After ending their relationship, Common, whose real name is Lonnie Rashid Lynn, claimed in an interview that their breakup was “mutual.”

But Haddish in a previous interview with The Washington Post said that wasn’t the case. She said some things took place before the Kingdom rapper ultimately broke up with her on the phone. The events in question included her then-boyfriend not inviting her to his own birthday party.

Haddish told PEOPLE that the time they parted ways did not come as a surprise to her after she looked into her ex-boyfriend’s dating history.

“It’s every two years. It’s like six to nine months single and then two years on [in a relationship] and then six to nine months single and then two years on. That’s his schedule. That’s his cycle,” Haddish said.

“I ain’t mad at that,” she explained. “There’s a gang of old a– men that’s not famous that’s doing the same thing.” The comedian, however, said she doesn’t want to experience that kind of relationship again.

“I want a partner,” she said. “I would like for us to have a wedding but not necessarily a marriage contract. I want the party and the relationship. I do not want the license.”

“I want us to be in a trust and if we have kids or we adopt kids, they’re going to be trust fund babies. And I think we should both change our names,” she said in reference to a marriage license.

Haddish and Common had a similar non-traditional plan while they were romantically involved. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Tiffany, you wanted to marry him so bad’,” she said. “And I’m like, if I wanted to marry that man, I would not have been talking about him buying me an apartment building. I think a deed is more powerful than a marriage license and easier to get out of. At least there’s some return on that investment.”
