A T-shirt branded with the image of ex-cop Derek Chauvin with his knee on the neck of George Floyd was for a short time up for sale on Amazon, but has since been pulled off.
According to Amazon, the shirt was put up by a third-party vendor with an example photo of the shirt worn by a white child. The shirts were sold for $14.99 as part of other paraphernalia marketed in the spirit of the Black Lives Matter moment.
The BBC says Amazon has confirmed it is investigating the matter. “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. The product in question is no longer available,” Amazon’s statement to the BBC read.
George Floyd’s death
The video of 46-year-old Floyd killed while being restrained on May 26 by Minneapolis police officers sparked outrage after showing ex-officer Chauvin kneeling on his neck for close to nine minutes until Floyd became unresponsive.
All this happened while the deceased was in handcuffs. Even when he became unresponsive while pinned to the ground, the white police officer did not remove his knee from the victim’s neck until paramedics arrived.
From Minnesota to Madrid, protest marches have taken place as part of an unprecedented spread of the Black Lives Matter movement since Floyd’s death.
Even the White House was not spared as Washington D.C. protesters congregated near the seat of the presidency as officers tried to confront them while President Donald Trump was evacuated to an underground bunker for his safety.
In the UK, thousands marched past Parliament last Sunday, with hundreds taking a knee in Trafalgar Square.
Marching along the Thames, they chanted “Black lives matter” carrying signs with slogans such as “Your silence is deafening,” “Racism is a global issue” and “How many more?” At the U.S. Embassy in London, the protesters demanded justice for Floyd.
