The votes are in! The African National Congress (ANC) has won South Africa’s general election by a huge margin. ANC won 63% of the votes while the Democratic Alliance (DA) fell behind with 22% of the votes.
The election focused on major issues facing the country including unemployment, corruption and inequality. Despite the challenges and criticism faced, the ruling party ANC was unwavering as President Jacob Zuma has been re-elected for a second five-year term.
According to BBC, the election went smoothly overall with a voter turnout of just over 72%.
“The elections are the first since the death in December of Nelson Mandela – the country’s first black president – and mark 20 years since the end of white-minority rule.”
