Well, it clearly seems like Serena Williams can’t cut some slack looking at what she has had to endure over the past few weeks (almost tempted to believe there’s an agenda against her).
First, it was her controversial U.S. Open Women’s Final match against 20-year-old Haitian-Japanese Naomi Osaka where the match umpire made it his personal mission to make sure she lost, which he succeeded, then a very racist caricature of her with very huge lips stomping on a tennis racket published by Australian newspaper The Herald Sun.
The portrayal of her features was highly reminiscent of how blacks were seen in minstrel shows and advertisements during the days of Jim Crow. To make matters worse, the cartoonist, Mark Knight, as well as The Herald Sun, refused to apologize.
When we thought she was finally going to get a breather, another clearly idiotic bunch of white folks thought otherwise. On Wednesday, the Huffington Post ran a story about three white Australian Rules football players attending a party dressed up in blackface impersonating Serena and Venus Williams as well as a colleague Kenyan-born footballer by name Aliir Aliir.
Their inexcusable act, which received fierce backlash forced both the players as well as their team, the Penguin Football Club to come out and apologize.
In a statement to the Huffington Post, the club said it had no knowledge the players “intended to dress in this manner” and that their actions were “unacceptable in this day and age.” HuffPost further on added that albeit the club confirmed the players have been reprimanded, they were adamant their “actions were never intended to be racist in any way” and “all they meant to do was dress as one of their sporting idols.”
Well, I don’t know about y’all but this looks like a half-baked apology condoning racism.
