Artist Spotlight- Brianna McCarthy

Based in Trinidad and Tobago, Brianna McCarthy is a visual artist whose creative mediums expand to drawings, illustrations and collages. Brianna’s intricate and unique pieces beautifully portray Afro-Caribbean women in various manners that stray away from the stereotypical depiction of black women. With colors and designs that is without a doubt is inspired by the diversity of her island, Brianna rises gracefully into the light of recognition marking her as a yet another artist to keep an eye on.

Upon being asked on how she came to create such art, she replies saying that her work was not intentional. She had not been encouraged to pursue art until a few years ago when the right circumstances came about. It was from there she started her blog ‘Passion Fruit (http://briannamccarthy.blogspot.com/) which served as yet another medium to showcase her work. Now her work has been featured in the U.K, the United States and of course, throughout the Caribbean. Brianna now designs for The Cloth Design Company and will soon have some of her work appear in Pop’Africana Magazine. Her art is destined only for prosperity of which she gives credit to her mother’s advice of “Don’t let anyone muzzle you.” It is with this that she continues to make her mark. Brianna ends the brief interview with, “My art is what I have at my disposal to encourage, comfort and add beauty to this life. This is how I can share love.”
