Black Entertainment Television’s Best International Act: Africa is an award given to honour the outstanding international artists from Africa every year.
Since the category’s inception in 2011, winners were presented the award outside the main stage, something that causes angry uproar every year.
But that is set to change in 2018 after the BET award organisers announced that the category winner will receive the award on the main stage.
This came after a series of complaints by African artists and their fans over the years.
Nigerian artist Wizkid, who has won the award twice, had in 2015 complained about the treatment of the African artists.
UK-based Ghanaian Afrobeat artiste, Fuse ODG also refused to attend the 2015 awards, accusing BET for disrespecting African artists.
In their response, one of the adjudicators, Kwesi Kyei Darkwah, of the award claimed that as an American organisation, ‘BET may create opportunities for Africans by giving us nomination or award, recognize us for our culture or learn from them, but they do not see us as superior over theirs!
