Joaquim Barbosa, Brazil’s first black chief justice, has joined the Brazilian Socialist Party in a bid run for presidency in October when the country goes to the polls.
Although the 63-year-old has never contested for a political seat, he has been on the limelight for various judgements including the imprisonment of aides to former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
He has also been a popular face on presidential opinion polls, with many stating that he could change the status quo in a country that needs it. He is seen as an alternative in a country rocked by political and corruption scandals.
“My talks with the PSB have led to an understanding that allows me the comfort of having more time to reflect on a final decision on running,” Barbosa said in a statement after meeting with the party.
The former president of the court, who retired in 2014, joins the party a day before the deadline for candidates to become party members as by Brazilian Law. However, the part has until August 15 to register their candidates.
