Multi-talented Nigerian Afro R&B vocalist and composer Brymo has kicked off the New Year with the video release of “Billion Naira Dream.”
“Billion Naira Dream” — off of Brymo’s lastest album, Klitoris — is about reaching for glory through his art, with lines like, “I’m telling stories in the song I sing/Searching for glory in the life I live.”
The video for the song was shot in a documentary format and features Brymo, whose real name is Olawale Ashimi, saying that his “… ‘Billion Naira Dream’ would be to see improvement in every area of my society, and of course, to be a part of that improvement – to build and to contribute.”
The video reveals an intimate side of Brymo who is known for other hits, such as “Good Morning” and “Ara.” It was shot in Nigeria and was co-directed by two ace cinematographers: Dare (Drhey Studios) and Uche Chukwu (Campfire Films).
Brymo is without a doubt one of the most-talented male vocalists from Nigeria. Singing in mostly Yoruba and pidgin English, he has managed to fuse his powerful, sonorous vocals with indigenous content (proverbs and idioms) to create a style of music that comes off as contemporary even as it retains a heavy touch of tradition.
The only child of his parents, Brymo was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, to a carpenter Father and a Mother who ran a petty corner store. The singer grew up in a multi-faith household, where he was inspired to create music after listening to his mother sing along to numerous “Fuji” songs.
Brymo believes in constantly challenging and pushing himself to new heights and says, “Every single time I grab a pen to write a song, I’m trying to write a song that’s better than the song I wrote before. So that ideology sort of creates a behavioral pattern for me that I must constantly adhere to.”
The 31-year-old, who recently signed a distribution deal with Clockwise Distribution, says he plans to be around and keep making hits for a long time to come.
