Already out of the tournament, Africa’s representative Cameroon went in to the game playing for pride after two straight defeats in Group A.
Samuel Eto’o, Cameroon’s best player, was conspicuously missing from the starting lineup.
Brazil pressured the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon right from the start of play, with Neymar scoring the 100th goal of the 2014 World Cup in the 17th minute by connecting with a low Luiz Gustavo cross.
The stadium erupted and the game looked like it was going to be another drubbing of the African team who had lost in the 1994 edition to a Brazilian side by 3-0.
However, in the 26th minute, the much-anticipated drubbing was temporally paused as Cameroon’s Allan Nyom passed midfielder Joel Matip for a simple tap-in at Brazil’s far post for an equalizer.
The silence in the stadium after the equalizer was short-lived, though, as Neymar restored Brazil’s lead in the 35th minute. Unfortunately, Cameroon’s keeper, Charles Itandje, couldn’t stop the Brazilian maestro for the second time in the night.
The abysmal Cameroon defense conceded two more goals in the second half to end their tournament without a point from 3 games.
Frederico “Fred” Chaves Guedes scored a close range header from a David Luiz‘s cross from the left side in the 49th minute.
The 84th minute saw substitute Fernandinho surge forward and score the final goal of the match after a one-two with Oscar.
All is not lost for Africa’s representatives, though. Ghana, Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, and Algeria still have a chance to make it through to the second round.
