Chicago mom fatally shot in same spot son was killed just days earlier

A Chicago mother of six was fatally shot at the same sidewalk her 14-year-old son was also killed just three days earlier. According to Chicago Sun-Times, the Wednesday incident occurred when Delisa Tucker was making her way to a memorial for her deceased son in the Roseland neighborhood.

She was almost at the spot when she was fatally struck by a bullet. Tucker’s friends said she had wanted to light a candle in honor of her son Kevin Tinker.

“It’s just sad that this whole family, basically, to be killed over time,” a pastor who attended a vigil for Kevin on Sunday said. “I’m devastated.” Tucker’s brother was fatally shot two years earlier, and her then 6-year-old daughter was also almost killed after she was shot some years prior to that incident.

No arrests have been made in connection with Tucker and her son’s killings. Police have also not disclosed if their deaths are connected.

Tucker’s son was hit by multiple bullets while he was standing on a sidewalk on Sunday. The deceased 14-year-old was standing around a home that had earlier been targeted that same day, police Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said, per Chicago Sun-Times. Deenihan, however, did not disclose if Kevin was the intended target.

“They were not gang-banging,” a woman said. “Kevin was a quiet boy. He was just starting to get out of his shell.” On Wednesday, Kevin’s mother met the same fate at the same location.

Despite efforts by city officials to mitigate gun violence and gang activity in the community as well as 14 other places over the last year, Roseland reportedly remains one of Chicago’s deadliest neighborhoods. With 26 fatal shootings in Roseland this year, the neighborhood is set to record more fatalities than 2020, per data from Sun-Times.

Roseland also falls under the jurisdiction of the Calumet police district. And there have been at least 61 homicides in the district this year. That is a 49% rise as compared to this period last year. There has also been a 31% rise in shootings.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been set up to help raise funds to support the Tucker family.
