This season’s Brooklyn Fashion Week was set in the beautiful industrial district in Brooklyn, New York featuring a creative production and stylist team. I was one of the lucky few selected to be one of the stylists for the show. I was particularly chosen to work closely with the “Coming to America” day featuring mostly African born designers with pieces that awed the crowd. With the influx of demand from afro-fashionistas and celebrities alike looking elsewhere for exotic prints to indulge in, Brooklyn Fashion Week set the stage on September 30th, 2011 with over six designers from Africa. The African designers included:
Lea Mono from Mozambique
Uche – Omak Designs from Nigeria
Kachi Designs from Nigeria
Felix Anaman from Ghana
Aso Damisi from Nigeria
Denim by Marie from South Africa
I worked closely with Felix Anaman for Felix Anaman Clothing as this was his first debut on American soil. His pieces were fun, flirtatious, and bold while infusing practicality from day wear to evening wear. He used my favorite colors too; green and purple, and of course, the traditional Kente in a long fitted skirt and burgundy jeweled top. He also played with colorful feathers and long trains to some of his garments. There’s nothing more interesting than a designer that understands/appreciates the physique of a woman and drapes his designs to gracefully show a woman’s curves. At the end, his debut was a success!
