Democratic congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, has filed for divorce from her husband Ahmed Hirsi, citing an “irretrievable breakdown” of her marriage.
The divorce filing comes after a Washington DC female resident, Beth Mynett, claimed in court that the politician had an affair with her husband, The Daily Mail reported.
Mynett said her husband told her he was in love with the Democrat and that he was ending his marriage for Ms Omar, according to the divorce papers filed in August 2019.
When the alleged affair with Tim Mynett and Omar made headlines earlier, the Congresswoman denied it.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mynett had been working with Omar in the lead up to the 2018 mid-term elections. Mynett reportedly worked with Omar through his business, E Street Group, even after Omar became one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress.
Barely two months after the Democratic political consultant whose wife alleged in a divorce filing last month that he was leaving her for the Minnesota congresswoman, Omar has also filed for divorce from Hirsi.
According to Ms Omar’s lawyer Jaime Driggs, “For years, Ilhan and Ahmed have been the object of speculation and innuendo from political opponents and the media. This has taken a significant toll on Ilhan, Ahmed, and their three children.”
“As with all marriages, this is intensely personal and a difficult time for their family,” Driggs said, stating that the Minnesota congresswoman wished for privacy and would have no further comment.
The couple with three children have been together for many years but not without complications. It was in 2018 that they became legally married.
The Hill reported that Omar and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi married in 2009 and later obtained a divorce in 2011 in their Muslim faith tradition — although not a legal one.
They came back together and had their third child in 2012. Omar officially filed to divorce Elmi in 2017, and legally married Hirsi in 2018.
It was reported earlier this year that a Minnesota campaign finance board’s investigation found that the 38-year-old freshman congresswoman and Hirsi filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015, while she was still legally married to Elmi.
Omar is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress and a member of the “Squad,” reported to be a subject of criticism from President Trump.
Omar, 38, rose to become the first Somali-American lawmaker based in Minneapolis, and later became the subject of a new documentary titled “Time for Ilhan.”
From being a Somali refugee, she took the seat by more than 20,000 votes, out of 135,318 votes cast leading her on track to be one of two Muslim women in Congress today.
