Delta Angers Followers with Giraffe Posting of Black Stars

So while most Africans were either fuming or pushed in to a debilitating depression Monday night, after Ghana’s Black Stars lost to the United States in the World Cup, Delta Airlines was busy apologizing over Twitter for their ignorance over animals that live in Ghana.

Celebrating the United States’ win, Delta posted the Statue of Liberty with the U.S. team’s score on the photo. For Ghana, though, Delta selected a giraffe.


The seemingly benign posting irritated followers, with many tweeters criticizing the posting for its erroneous assumption that giraffes live in Ghana.

And while giraffes can be found throughout many different countries on the continent, including Somalia, Tanzania, Chad, and South Africa, Ghana isn’t one of them.

Quickly seeing the error of their ways, Delta then sent out the following apology:

But Delta wouldn’t be able to sidestep controversy: in their haste to make peace with their disgruntled followers, they initially used the word “precious” in the place of the word “previous,” causing them to delete that posting and repost once again.

Either way, some Twitter followers remained unmoved:
