A former president of Botswana, Ian Khama, has revealed his intentions to sue his country’s government after he was accused of embezzling millions of dollars.
The BBC reports that the former president has been cited along with a South African businesswoman and a number of former officials while Khama was president.
A Botswana government investigation claims that while he was president of the country, Khama and his alleged cohorts set up bank accounts in Hong Kong and South Africa to finance terrorism.
But Khama and the other accused have all denied the allegations. Khama, in a press conference in South Africa, described the claims as wild and a conclusion of a state-sponsored smear campaign.
Khama accused the government of betraying Botswana and reversing decisions, among which includes lifting the ban on elephant hunting.
The former president, whose father was Botswana’s independence leader, has had a rather turbulent relationship with his successor, President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
Khama was president of Botswana between 2008 and 2018.
