Fans outraged as slain rapper’s body is propped up on stage at nightclub funeral, family speaks

The family of a slain Maryland rapper who was displayed at a nightclub as sympathizers danced around his body have said that the send-off event was exactly how they wanted to celebrate his life and they have no regrets.

Videos of Markelle Morrow’s body being displayed at Bliss Nightclub on Sunday went viral after they circulated on social media. And though some people condemned the family’s actions, the deceased rapper’s mother, Patrice Morrow, said she’s at liberty to say “goodbye” to her son in whichever way that she deems fit, FOX 5 DC reported.

“For all the negatives, people probably don’t even know nothing about us,” she said. “They have no idea. People just saying what they want to say and that’s fine. That’s perfectly fine. I’m pleased with how I sent my son away. I wish people would just let me grieve in peace.”

Videos of the event show the deceased rapper being fully displayed on what looks like a stage as the audience looks on. His lifeless body is placed in a standing position. After the videos went viral, people reportedly questioned why the nightclub consented to have Morrow’s body displayed at the establishment. But Morrow’s family claimed they worked with the funeral house and the nightclub, FOX 5 DC reported. They also said they don’t care about the negative response.

“We’re not trying to clear anything up,” Morrow’s sister, Ariana Morrow, said. “We don’t care about anybody and what ya’ll have to say negative. Nobody. We don’t care.

“They’re like, I know his mama wouldn’t approve of that. Yeah, she did, she was on stage with us.”

In a statement on Instagram on Monday, Bliss rendered an apology to family, fans, and friends. The nightclub claimed that though the funeral home got in touch with them, they were “never made aware of what would transpire.”

“We sincerely apologize to all those who may be upset or offended,” Bliss added.

Morrow, whose stage name was Goonew, was fatally shot on March 18. Police are still investigating his death. Authorities have also offered a $25,000 reward for information that will assist with investigations.
