Father of Pan-Africanism and Ghana’s First President Kwame Nkrumah Died This Day in 1972

Nkrumah’s prodigious intellect was noticed early when he finished the ten-year elementary school programme in eight years. Many years later in college, he was exposed to the ideas of great pan-Africanists such as Marcus Garvey (who influenced him in no small measure), W.E.B. Du Bois and others. He alluded to their impact on him in a quote that is frequently displayed on social media pages:

“Of all literature I studied, the book that did more than any other to fire my enthusiasm was Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey.

Fired up by these ideas of equality, freedom, African Personality and unity, Nkrumah pursued further studies in Europe and America. He studied at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania, where he bagged degrees in education, philosophy and theology.

During his sojourn in America, he often preached at Presbyterian churches in New York City and immersed himself in the study of socialism, politics, philosophy and divinity literature. By 1945, Nkrumah was already an important figure to be reckoned with within the Pan-African Movement such that he helped organized the Fifth Pan-African Congress in Manchester, England.

He holds a B.A (Hons) in History and Diplomatic Studies from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria and an MBA degree with specialization in General Management and Entrepreneurship as well as a Master of Science degree in International Relations both from the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He was a recipient of the Guerrand Hermes Foundation for Peace Scholarship in 2006. He got the Best Student Leader award and also a merit award from the Faculty of Arts Students Association during his undergraduate days. Adedeji is a development strategist/activist and youth empowerment advocate. He is a Member, African Studies Association of the UK; Member, Royal African Society; Member, African Institute of Business Simulations, etc. His main research interests are in Politics, Society and Governance in West Africa, Africa inter-state relations, emerging powers, security, democratization and regional integration in West Africa. He has published articles in local and international journals; public media, among other several works.
