Five African women-led companies leading the tech revolution on the continent

Due to rapid urbanization in most African cities, adult children are migrating to urban areas in search of work or to attend school. As a result, they leave their aging parents behind, in most cases, with no one available to take care of them.

That was how Chika Madubuko found a gap in the home care industry. It was partly her experience, too. As a bioengineer and an entrepreneur, she found herself struggling to meet work demands and also care for her grandmother.

Together with two others, she founded Greymate Care in 2016 to provide care to the elderly in Nigeria. The app connects the aged to professional caregivers.

“At Greymate Care, our staff are well trained, have been background checked (including providing two guarantors and referees each) and are closely monitored through high-tech GPS tagging by a care assessor and co-ordinator so your loved ones can get high-quality care whenever, wherever,” Greymate says on its website.

Greymate Care won a Bronze prize at the She Leads Africa Accelerator Programme and also made the cut for Forbes 2019 under 30.

Chika is an alumnus of the University of Hertfordshire where she studied MSc Biotechnology. In June, she was named Hertfordshire AInternational Alumnus/Alumna of the year.
