Faces of Black Excellence

Five black female athletes under 25 who have made history

A good number of black female athletes have emerged as trailblazers in their particular sports over the years, from track and field and tennis to figure skating and basketball.

Their stories are significant because they have, through history till now, spurred many people on to achieve great feats in not only sports but other disciplines. The battles and hard-won victories of pioneers such as Alice Coachman, Althea Gibson, Wilma Rudolph and Lynette Woodard helped pave the way for later generations of sports greats like Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Sheryl Swoopes and Venus and Serena Williams.

This story of excellent black female athletes continues till date and in this article, we look at five of these athletes who are under 25 years old but have already established themselves in the world of sports
