Flavor Flav is known for his music career but he is also a true sports lover. Reacting to a plea from Maggie Steffens, captain of the U.S. women’s water polo team, the hip-hop legend has vowed to assist them in their journey to the Paris Olympics.
The three-time gold medalist opened up about the financial hardships facing many Olympians such as working multiple jobs to support their dreams. Posting a story on Instagram on May 4, Stiffens explained her team’s struggles in securing funding for necessities like travel, accommodations, and training, as reported by WBLS.
The renowned hip-hop icon decided to surprise many by offering his support. He declared that he would personally sponsor the U.S. women’s water polo team.
“AYYY YOOO,” he exclaimed, “I’mma personally sponsor you my girl, whatever you need.” He did not stop at individual support, he pledged to sponsor the entire team, as his way of showing commitment to women’s sports.
Flavor Flav promised to utilize his network and resources to raise awareness and support the team and the sport in its entirety.
“That’s a FLAVOR FLAV promise,” he added.
This gesture seems to have shocked the Olympic gold medalist. Stiffens thanked the Public Enemy founding member for his support.
“OMG THANK YOU!!!” Steffens replied. “That means the world! 🙏🏼🙏🏼You will love water polo! team behind the team! 💪🏼”
Backed by Flavor Flav, the U.S. women’s water polo team sets its sights on clinching a fourth consecutive gold medal in Paris.
The rap icon’s involvement in backing the U.S. women’s water polo team isn’t a standalone gesture. Last year, he surprised fans by singing the national anthem at a Milwaukee Bucks game, citing family ties to the military.
“It may seem odd for Flavor Flav, a member of Public Enemy to do the National Anthem. But I had family that served in the United States military and I wanted to honor them,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
