A former professional boxer, Floyd Mayweather, has disclosed that he will pay for all the funeral expenses of the slain George Floyd. According to CNN, Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, confirmed the boxer’s involvement in a statement to ESPN.
“He’ll probably get mad for me saying that, but yes, (Mayweather) is definitely paying for the funeral,” Ellerbe said.
He also said that Mayweather did not want to talk about what he is doing.
Hollywood Unlocked, the publication that broke the news of Mayweather’s involvement in Floyd’s funeral arrangements said that the family plans to hold three services in different locations, including Houston, Floyd’s hometown, Charlotte, and Minneapolis.
“The family is also looking to have a fourth service in another location. Mayweather has also offered to take care of those expenses as well,” Hollywood Unlocked reported.
The death of Floyd, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis, has sparked outrage in the U.S. Floyd died last Monday, May 25 while he was in the custody of four Minneapolis Police Department officers.
In a video, officer Derek Chauvin was filmed kneeling on the victim’s neck for several minutes until he became unresponsive, despite pleading he couldn’t breathe.
All this happened while Floyd was in handcuffs. Even when he became unresponsive while pinned to the ground, the white police officer did not remove his knee from the victim’s neck until paramedics arrived.
The four officers who were involved in the incident have been fired, a move Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey, said is the “right call.”
“I support your decisions, one hundred percent,” he said in a statement, according to CNN. “It is the right decision for our city. The right decision for our community, it is the right decision for the Minneapolis Police Department.”
