Former Kenyan First Lady Lucy Kibaki has passed on this morning at Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London three days after she was flown there for further treatment. Her Excellency had earlier been admitted at Nairobi Hospital for several weeks before moving to London on Saturday last week.
The announcement of her demise was delivered this morning by his Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has since sent his condolences to former President Mwai Kibaki and his family.
“It is with deep sense of sadness and loss that I have learnt of the untimely death of the Former First Lady, Her Excellency Mrs. Lucy Kibaki. She passed away early this morning while undergoing treatment in Bupa Cronwell Hospital in London,” President Uhuru said in his Facebook post.
The President added that Her Excellency will be remembered for her immense contribution to the development of the country, particularly her virtues of leadership and commitment to improving the well-being of the ordinary Kenyans and her focus on tackling HIV/AIDS.
Her Illness
News of Mrs Kibaki’s illness broke last month when she was rushed to Gertrude Children’s Hospital in Nairobi for “emergency treatment” at 4:00 am. She was later transferred to Nairobi Hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit before she was flown to London three days ago for further treatment.
In 2014, Lucy Kibaki had been rushed to St Teresa Hospital by her family members after she reportedly complained of chest pain.
The once-active former First Lady has been out of the public glare for more than five years.
Her last public appearance was in 2010 during the promulgation of the new constitution at Uhuru Park, Nairobi where she participated in a lively and energetic dance.
Details of her illness are still not known to the public. Her Excellency Lucy Kibaki was born in 1940 and has died at the age of 76 years.
