Ghana’s parliament on Monday observed a minute’s silence for victims of the deadly New Zealand terror attacks as well as the tropical cyclone that ravaged some parts of Africa but “forgot” to do same for victims of a very gory accident that happened in the north-western part of the country resulting in over 60 casualties.
Ironically, the fatal accident occurred just last Friday whereas the New Zealand incident, which left about 50 people dead occurred March 15. The tropical cyclone, which also hit parts of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi with a death toll of over 700 happened some eleven days ago.
According to GhanaWeb, a Member of Parliament read a statement offering the parliament of Ghana’s condolences to New Zealand while another also did same for the victims of the tropical cyclone while calling for donations in “cash or in kind.”
With Ghanaians still in mourning over the accident which occurred after two buses loaded with passengers collided on the Techiman-Kintampo road, the news of the MPs not making mention of the incident but rather commiserating with the others was heavily criticized on social media.
Take a look at some of the reactions below:
This news comes in the wake of Face2Face Africa’s recent feature of rapper Meek Mill recently tweeting about the Mozambique cyclone and questioning why American social media never supports African tragedies.
The question received thousands of Retweets and Replies with a section of Twitter users from Africa blaming Africans for being silent on their own tragedies but rather paying too much attention to the West.
While the debate goes on, there was an attack in Mali where armed men on Sunday reportedly dressed as traditional hunters killed 134 villagers including women and children. This too has not trended on social media.
Early Tuesday morning, Ghana’s parliament observed a minute’s silence for those that perished in the road accident after the heavy backlash.
