Graça Machel Accepts Half of Nelson Mandela’s Estate

The executors of former President Nelson “Madiba” Mandela‘s last will and testament have confirmed this week that wife Graca Machel (pictured) has formally accepted her benefits, according to an exclusive report by DestinyConnect.

Machel was given 90 days from 3 February, when the will was read, to decide on whether she would accept half of Mandela’s estate, which is estimated to be worth R46 million.

On behalf of the executors, Judge Dikgang Moseneke said, “I confirm that Mrs. Machel has formally and in writing accepted the benefits bequeathed to her in the last will and testament of former President, Mr. NR Mandela.”

Machel and Mandela were married in 1998 in community of property, which means that she was entitled to receive half of his estate.

In his will, Mandela also left four properties to Machel. The couple jointly owned the properties, which are all located in Mozambique.

He also willed Machel all their vehicles, jewelry, and money from his bank accounts.

Mandela’s Houghton home was bequeathed to a family trust; however, Machel is allowed to take art and artifacts from the residence.

Josina and Malengani Machel, the children from Graça’s marriage to the late-Mozambican President Samora Machel, will each receive R3 million.

Madiba also left R100 000 each to Samora Machel’s six children born from a previous marriage. The six are Joselina, Samora Junior, Manthyane, Atwane, Turila, and Olivia Machel.

Mandela also gave his late-son Makgato Mandela R3,3 million and his daughter Makaziwe Mandela R3,3 million in advance of his death.

His grandchildren Mandla, Ndaba, Mbuso, and Andile Mandela from Evelyn Mase, his first wife, will each receive R3,3 million; however, Mandla’s and Ndaba’s inheritance is apparently held in the Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela trust.

Mandela’s second wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, was not mentioned in the will, but the children from this union, Zindzi and Zenani, received R3, 3 million each and their children each got R100 000.

Mandela left R50 000 to each of his nine personal employees, including his former personal assistant Zelda La Grange and his cook Xoliswa Ndoyiya.

Mandela also left money to a number of educational institutions, which include Qunu High School, the University of the Witwatersrand, and Fort Hare University, which all received a sum of R100 000.

Finally, he left R100 000 to Orlando West High School for its contribution to the liberation of the country.

Currently, the family is in the second phase of the mourning period, with the third phase of mourning ending in June. Machel concluded the entire mourning process, which was reduced from one year to six months.
