Cahora Bassa, Mozambique

This lake came about from the construction of the Cahora Bassa dam by the Portuguese. Although Mozambique currently has full ownership of the dam, it was an initial 82% Portuguese ownership against the 18% that was owned by Mozambique.

The dam was started in the 1960s by the Portuguese colonial government, in agreement with South Africa. By 1974, the lake began to be filled but unfortunately, the long post-independence civil war Portugal prevented the use of the scheme.

In that process, the transmission lines and towers were damaged, limiting use of the electricity that Cahora Bassa could produce.

In 1995 however, renewal works begun and by 1997, the dam was back in full operation but not at a full capacity.
